SlickBlue3 Theme

I’ve received some interest from some people who would like to use my recently installed theme on their own websites. So I’ve decided to release it as a pre-release version 0.1. The theme is a modified version of the original Kubrick theme that comes as the default with the stock installation of Wordpress. I used LiewCF’s Three Columns Kubrick Theme as a base and also pulled elements from the FastTrack theme for the top navigation buttons.

Here is a screenshot of the theme. It is currently being used by this site and I’ve named it SlickBlue3.

The theme is released under the GPL and is available for download here. Also just as a kind gesture, if you use this theme I would appreciate if you link to my blog for recognition. Of course you are under no obligation to do so but I would appreciate it nonetheless!

I decided to give my blog a fresh look. This new theme is a customized version of three column mod to the original Kubrick theme that is the Wordpress default. Recognition should be given to this three column theme. I also pulled some elements from the FastTrack theme that can be found here.

You also might notice that I am now running some advertisements from Google AdSense. In fact, the site redesign was inspired by my desire to put up some ads in some unobtrusive way. I thought a three column approach would be the most suitable and I do like the new look. In terms of the Google Ads, I was intrigued by the program and figured I had nothing to lose. Perhaps I can generate enough revenue to pay the small monthly hosting fee to maintain this site.

I finally got my theme working the way I wanted. I had to brush up on my CSS and I was wrestling with the stylesheets to get it formatted correctly. In any case I ended up going with a customized version of the Stylish Blue Modern theme that can be found at Alex King’s website. It’s not fully tested yet so if you see any problems let me know.

I’ve been messing with a theme that I downloaded from Matthew Maber’s website. I don’t really have it configured quite the way I want it yet and it’s kind of hacked up right now. In any case, I thought I’d enable it for now and then mess around with it some more when it’s not 3:00 in the morning

It turns out that my new theme is broken in internet explorer. I will have to investigate this in the morning. Switching back to the old theme temporarily.

Yet Another Blogger

So my new home on the web, owenkellett.info, is now live and fully functional. Now that my life is moving into a new chapter (life after college), I thought I’d try my hand in the blogging community. Those of you that know me might think that this is an uncharacteristic venture for me. Perhaps it is. Although one of my motivations for starting this site is to provide a testbed for playing around with various internet related technologies. Additionally, I’ve often planned on establishing a truly personal presence on the web but I suppose have just never gotten around to it. Not only was I unsure of what to put for content but my experience in the past with making toy websites is that they usually grow old and stale quickly because of a lack of updates.

Thus I figure creating a blog as the core of my site is the most suitable way to keep the content fresh. I’m not quite yet sure what my typical writings will be about but hopefully my own blogging style will mature on its own. So why a .info domain do you ask? I thought about going with one of the big three (.com, .net, .org) but those all have commercial or organizational implications. I wanted the feel of this site to be truly personal and therefore I think a top level .info domain name achieves this the best. In any case welcome to owenkellett.info. Hopefully it will become the solid personal online presence that I’m looking for.

owenkellett.info is born!

After drowning in the endless selection of blogging software out there I’ve finally settled on WordPress. At the moment I have it set up on my own personal computer running Ubuntu Linux with stock installs of apache, php, and mysql. Since this computer is my main computer and a laptop, I hope to find a better solution for this soon. What’s nice about WordPress is that it has a relatively simple pluggable theme architecture. So I’m currently working on customizing a theme I found from wpthemes.org.
My PHP skills are pretty rusty though so this could take a while.
